Treat Mother Earth the Way You’d Like to be Treated

An article by B4AC National Ambassador Alyssa Magalong of Colorado:

Growing up in a Filipino-American household in Colorado Springs, I remember seeing my parents drying our clothes on a clothing rack in our backyard. My mom turned the faucet off while she was soaping the dishes. My dad sorted through our household recyclables to drop off at a recycling center each month.

I, too, was expected and encouraged to do these tasks similarly to my parents. At that age, I simply thought that’s how things were done. Little did I know, my parents were instilling in me and my three older Kuyas (Tagalog for older brothers) the values of the 5 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink, and Respect. While I continue to practice many of these values today, I realize that I can improve daily. Being an ambassador of Beauties for a Cause has challenged me to reflect on what I’ve done well and how I can improve as an Earth warrior.

As I continue to strive to make Earth day everyday, here are my top 5 commitments and Earth Resolutions for the remaining year:

  1. Host cleanups each month in my state of Colorado.

  2. Recycle in my household.

  3. Use reusable bags, bottles, and straws to reduce my plastic use.

  4. Conserve water and energy.

  5. Encourage and educate others on how they can make changes to their lifestyle to care for Mother Earth.

There is only one Earth! Each of us has a responsibility not only to ourselves, but to each other and all living things.

I like to use the Golden Rule when caring for our Earth: Treat Mother Earth the way you’d like to be treated. If we change and frame our mindset as such, my hope is that we can create more urgency to combat climate change collectively.

What are your Earth resolutions?
